ELI programs in Kenya are based in Nakuru, but orphanage placements are also available in Nairobi and at the base of Mount Kenya. The International Work Camps are a great alternative for volunteers looking for a low cost volunteer experience in Kenya.
Orphanages and Street Children UNICEF estimates that approximately 2.3 million children in Kenya are orphans. Many of these children move in with relatives after the deaths of their parents. Orphans are often put to work, denied the opportunity to attend school, and suffer physical abuse. Many run away or are forced out of the house. These children turn to the street or an orphanage for refuge. ELI works with orphanages in Nakuru, Nairobi, and the base of Mt. Kenya as well as with day centers for street children in Nakuru. These organizations all place a large emphasis on the education and empowerment of the children. Volunteers at these organizations will assist with the daily tasks such as feeding the children, making sure everyone is clean and clothed properly, leading activities, helping with homework, and other tasks. Volunteers can also organize classes and educational activities. The orphanges are very good at providing the children with the basic daily needs, but the children are often lacking the personal attention they need to really thrive. Volunteers have the chance to serve as a role model and mentor as well as to motivate the children to study. Hospitals and Dispensaries Several hospitals and dispensaries in and around Nakuru are in need of volunteers with medical skills to assist with daily tasks. All the organizations are either public hospitals or community based health initiatives. Teaching
As in many countries, the Kenyan school system is facing many challenges including limited resources, overcrowding, and lack of qualified teachers. Volunteers can work at a primary or secondary school in Nakuru. Volunteers will assist by teaching English and other subjects. Getting involved with extra curricular activities is also encouraged. Conservation Volunteers can work with the Kenya Wildlife Service at Nakuru National Park. The park is home to a dazzling array of wildlife including a famous flock of flamingoes and rare white rhinos. Volunteers will help with ongoing projects such as the wildlife census, trail and campsite maintenance, and other ongoing activities. International Work Camps
The International Work Camp Program is a low-cost alternative that gives volunteers the opportunity to work on a three week long project with other volunteers from all over the world. The projects are organized by the Kenya Voluntary Development Association and serve all areas of Kenya. Volunteers meet in Nairobi for a 1-day orientationbefore heading off to the work camp site as a group. ELI, along with many other organizations worldwide, provides volunteers for these projects. |
