ELI has two volunteer programs each summer in Poland. We are fortunate to be linked with excellent partners in and around the city of Krakow, Poland, where volunteers are needed to help build a Holocaust memorial park at the site of Plaszow (pronounced Pwa-shoof) concentration camp, the infamous camp portrayed in the movie Schindler's List. Join these impassioned organizers as they reclaim this neglected, tragic ground. The second program is in the north of Poland. Here you can work with disadvantaged children in a summer camp, teaching them English. Either way, you'll have a meaningful experience.
Of course Krakow is one of Europe's most beautiful old cities, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Krakow's renaissance arcades and cobblestone streets provide a magical setting for the city's vibrant cultural life, its museums, restaurants, pubs and glorious cafes. The nearby Kazimierz, an old Jewish neighborhood, is an eclectic mixture of old and new. Here you can hear kletzmer music, visit one of Europe's oldest synagogues and cemeteries, enjoy Jewish cuisine and get a fascinating glimpse into Polish Judaica. The Plaszow project is an important one. Couple this with the excitment of Krakow, Kazimierz and the areas around them, and you have a great opportunity for a rewarding summer experience. |
