Bolivia is a landlocked country in the heart of South America. It is one of the most varied places on the planet: geographically, ecologically, and culturally. In western Bolivia, the peak of Sajama soars to a height of 21,460 feet while the rest of the country falls away to the eastern tropical lowlands. Dozens of ecosystems including tropical rainforest, freezing semi-arid peaks, and everything in between are home to some of the most diverse species on Earth. Home to the largest proportion of Indigenous people in South America, traditional religions, dress, and customs are still practiced in the daily lives of millions of Bolivians.
The geography and culture of Bolivia intertwine into an exotic land of amazing sites and whispers of ancient civilizations. Economically, Bolivia is the poorest country in South America. The country has faced a tumultuous history. ELI partners with organizations in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the largest city in Bolivia, to create unique volunteer and internship programs which offer insight into the daily lives of Bolivians and their vibrant culture. |
