China

To say that China is a country on the move is an understatement. China is growing at a blinding pace. As in other communist countries that have opened up to market-based economies, many people are getting wealthy, but far more are left behind. ELI volunteer programs in China aim to help the underprivileged.

ELI bases its programs in Beijing, but also works in Yanqing, about an hour north of the capital, just beyond the great wall. Beijing is, of course, a huge, and very modern metropolis. There are incredible sights to see in the city, but you shouldn't go expecting to find old China, or even communist China. At times it seems like the entire city has been rebuilt in the last 10 years. This dynamism makes living and working there an exciting experience.

For those who prefer a quieter environment, and cleaner air, Yanqing is a great option. It is a medium-sized town with wide boulevards and far less traffic, where people still rely heavily on bicycles for transportation. You will find it a friendly and welcoming place that will provide great opportunities for interacting with the people of China.

ELI partners with the International College at Beijing, an English liberal arts college operated by China Agricultural University. The College was the first institution in China to offer both American and English undergraduate degrees to Chinese students. Because of its reputation in China, it is one of the first places other Chinese institutions contact for issues dealing with English language instruction. The College provides a tremendous resource for ELI's China programs.
