ELI's programs in Germany offer the perfect opportunity to discover village life in this European country. The village is called Enkenbach-Alsenborn, 10 miles west of the city of Kaiserslautern. It is in the Palatinate, with Alsace about 40 miles to the South, the Rhine River about 40 miles to the North or East, and about 50 miles Southwest of Frankfurt. The region is known for its white wines, in particular the Riesling variety. In spite of its rural location, the superb German transportation system means that Heidelberg and the Black Forest are only about an hour away by train. Paris is reachable by train in 2 hours 20 minutes! Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Luxembourg are also easily reached. The people of Enkenbach-Alsenborn are friendly and welcoming. Your experience there will give you a unique look into German culture. |

Volunteers will assist at a center aiming to teach youths under 25 vocational and life skills that will help them to find work and be responsible adults. Volunteers are primarily needed to teach remedial English, but are more than welcome to help lead workshops or classes focusing on a variety of related issues. The center stresses the importance of English language knowledge and asks that volunteers only speak English while at the center. Volunteers must be creative and flexible, and be able to create a trusting relationship with the students. Each program is based on the volunteer’s area of interest, the needs of organizations, and volunteer's language skills. Volunteers generally work 4-7 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Volunteer’s exact schedule will be determined upon arrival in-country. Volunteers for this program must commit to a minimum of 4 weeks, and have intermediate German Speaking abilities.

Volunteers are needed to work, play and care for infants and toddlers throughout the city. Volunteers will spend time with children in a fun setting, and help out with a variety of educational and developmental activities. You’ll work with children who come from a wide range of family backgrounds. Any sort of organized activity is great ways to help these young children learn new skills that will help them succeed when they enter primary education. If you have a special interest (such as painting, music, gardening, soccer, etc) you can always incorporate those in some way to your activities at the orphanages. What might seem plain to you can be really exciting to them! Volunteers need to be creative, patient, and flexible. Exact schedules and tasks will be determined upon arrival and meeting with the center’s staff. Volunteers must have at least high-beginner German language skills.
