Examining Patients
Me examining a patient in pediatrics, most people come in with face masks for fear of H1N1 (as seen in the background).
Examining a Baby
Dr. Gamon examining a baby, who was later admitted.
With a Doctor
Dr. Gamon and me outside of the Pediatrics OPD (Outpatient Department).
WIth a Nurse
Me, Nurse Jieb (who I became friends with), and Dr, Gamon at the nurse’s station in OPD.
My Assessment
I was allowed to examine patients and give my assessment after Dr. Gamon had completed his initial exam.
Royal Office
The King’s father’s office when he did his residency at McCormick which contains his desk, bed, and a few historical items (he passed away 3 weeks into his residency).
Interns
Two of the other medical interns (Karen and Ritika) I met during my internship at the hospital.
OR Schedule
The surgery department’s schedule of procedures (coincidentally written in no particular order). I spent a week here and was able to see a wide variety of procedures such as a caesarian section, sinus surgery, burn cleaning, and brain surgey.
Surgery
Surgery to remove a breast tumor.
Anesthesiologist
Me and Dr. Praj, the anesthesiologist. He’s a really nice guy and offered to take me and a friend to Wat Doi Suthep in the mountains on my last day there and it was beautiful.
Waiting Room
The waiting area of the hospital, with doctor’s offices in the front. I spent a week shadowing doctors here.
Rehabilitation Hospital
My third week was at McKean Rehabilitation Hospital (on its own island!), which was transitioning into a nursing home. It used to be a leper colony/rehab center.
Physical Therapy
src="/images/stories/photo_journals/nancy/phan_017.jpg" alt="Physical Therapy" title="Physical Therapy" width="400" height="300" />Fourth year physical therapy students from Chiang Mai University visit once a week to work with the elderly living there.
Medical Students
First year students come to observe techniques and observe fourth year students.
Leprosy Patient
McKean teaches its leprosy patients skills to be productive and I helped two patients make banana chips (that they sell for income). The medication they take for leprosy turn their skin dark, but it’ll turn back to normal after they are taken off the medication.
Exercise
In the community, McKean encourages families to make homemade devices to help out the disabled. Here, this woman’s family constructed a make-shift pulley system with sand-filled water bottles so she can exercise her joints and muscles to keep them from getting stiff.
Volunteers
McKean also sends teams out into the communities and trains volunteers on physical therapy techniques to help out the disabled in their communities.
Volunteer Gathering
Another shot of the training workshop with all of the volunteers.
