ELI 2009 Grant Recipient:

The Social Development Center in Kathmandu, Nepal

ELI asks volunteers and interns to pay their program fees by check whenever possible.  So, instead of paying Visa or Mastercard a percentage, ELI saves on those credit card fees and donates that money to a different organization every year.  In October 2009, ELI nominated the Social Development Center in Kathmandu, Nepal to receive this year’s donation.

The Social Development Center (SDC) in Kathmandu is home to 13 kids orphaned due to the country’s political unrest and economic troubles.  Each year, the biggest challenge for the orphanage is to secure enough funding to support these thirteen children.

ELI volunteers Troy and Nicole from Canada spent a little over a month with the kids at SDC, and they supervised the spending of ELI’s 2009 donation.  In a flurry of excitement, they bought clotthree boys reading, orphanage, SDC, kathmandu, nepalhes, books, kitchen goods, groceries, soap, school supplies, medicine, etc.  “…Perhaps the most fulfilling has been to help foster the joy of reading. We took the kids four and five at a time to a bookstore to pick out some new material. An adventure all on its own!  …The new library includes almost forty books, covers all reading levels, and promises to keep them busy for a while!”

Thank you Troy and Nicole for all your hard work!  Happy trails friends!
